Despite the majority percentage points the left wing party seems to have gathered and the great victory it has clinched it may not be enough to form a majority government.
According to GPO head Takis Theodorikakos, New Democracy’s percentage increases slightly in a revised assessment of the polls but without a significant change in the gap between the two parties.
The answer to whether SYRIZA will form a majority government or not will be given by Singular Logic during their first assessment of the actual election results. However in this case Alexis Tsipras’ SYRIZA acquires a majority only if George Papandreou’s Socialist Democratic Movement party fails to enter Parliament.
Nevertheless these are minor details when the bigger picture is examined. That is, these results show the peoples strong wish for a SYRIZA government and a strong will for change after a long period of harsh austerity measures implemented by the previous New Democracy – PASOK coalition.
How the Greek parliament might look like after tonight is as follows
If George Papandreou manages to gain a place in the Greek Parliament SYRIZA will have between 146-158 seats in the 300 seat Parliament.
